JAMMU, Aug 12: Expressing serious concern over further shrinking of Dal Lake, former Sadar-e-Riyasat Dr Karan Singh has urged the Government of India to give top priority to restore the lake to its lost glory.
He lamented that despite several projects sanctioned to de-weed the lake and considerable sums of money allocated for this purpose over the decades, the situation has gone from bad to worse.
“This is a tragedy because the Dal Lake was the glory of Kashmir and it is extremely painful to see its steady deterioration from the beautiful lake that it was when I was growing up,” said Karan Singh who usually visits Srinagar each year and has been observing the magnificent Dak Lake shrinking further.
“I have come this time after two years and now even the area abutting the Boulevard is gradually also being covered by weeds,” he further said, adding that it would now need a miracle to restore the Dal Lake to its lost glory.
However, Dr Karan Singh observed that there was a glimmer of hope as there was a massive scheme which would involve huge investment over five years with international expertise to finally rid the lake of the aggressive weed growth.
“I would urge the Government of India to give this matter top priority. If we are able to achieve this miracle, it would be gratefully remembered by generations to come, not only by Kashmiris but by the whole country,” he added.
