JAMMU, Aug 8: Dr Surinder Kumar Mehta of Punjab University has been appointed as new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ladakh.
Dr Mehta is a renowned scientist and Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Centre for Advanced Studies in Chemistry, Punjab University, Chandigarh.
His appointment as the Vice-Chancellor has been made for a period of three years with effect from the date he takes over the charge.
A formal notification in this regard has been issued by R K Mathur, Lt Governor of UT Ladakh, who is also Chancellor of the University of Ladakh.
The University of Ladakh, which was established on December 16, 2018 under the University of Ladakh Act 2018 (enacted by the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir before re-organization of erstwhile J&K State into two Union Territories), is a cluster university comprising degree colleges of Leh, Kargil, Nubra Valley, Zanskar, Drass and Khalatse. Chewan Phunsog, former Chief Secretary of J&K and a retired IAS officer, is presently heading the university as In-charge Vice-Chancellor.
Prof S K Mehta is a fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and has served as Chairman Department of Chemistry and Director SAIF/CIL/UCIM. As Coordinator, Chandigarh Region Innovation Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC), Local Coordinator MHRD initiative GIAN and Coordinator UGC CAS, he did exceptional work.
Dr Mehta has more than 360 publications in international journals of repute and is an author of about 15 books/chapters. He was nominated as member of several DST, CSIR and UGC national committees. He is recipient of Haryana Vigyan Ratna award, renowned DAAD and JSPS fellowships several times, Bronze medal from Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI), Authors Award by Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), STE Award and Prof W U Malik Memorial Award of Indian Council of Chemists (ICC) for his outstanding contribution in research.
