Jammu, Apr 2: Dr. Nikhil Mahajan along with his team successfully performed rare implantation of J&K’s first ‘LEADLESS PACEMAKER’ on a 70 years old patient at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Hospital, Kakryal.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with multiple episodes of loss of unconsciousness. However, she has fully recovered after performance of the surgery.
Explaining the whole procedure. Dr. Nikhil Mahajan said “Micra is world’s smallest pacemaker. Unlike, most pacemakers that are placed in a patient’s chest with leads running to the heart, Micra is a leadless pacemaker so it’s implanted directly into the heart.Micra is placed in the heart via a vein in the leg. The procedure requires no chest incision and, unlike conventional pacemakers, does not create a scar or bump under the skin”.
He further added that “It eliminates potential medical complications arising from a chest incision and from wires running from a conventional pacemaker into the heart. Micra is 93% smaller than conventional pacemakers, about the size of a large vitamin capsule”.
With an aging population, the number of patients expected to live with pacemakers are expected to grow. Since the first pacemaker implantation in 1950s, cardiac pacemaker technology has rapidly advanced.
Despite these advances, the potential for complications and technical failure always necessitates consideration.For most of patients, the Micra design translates to fewer medical complications including infections, bleeding and lead failure; and fewer post-implant activity restrictions and short hospital stay.
Facility Director MM Mathawan while briefing about the world Class facilities at Narayana Hospital said “this is the rarest cardiac procedure and device is a revolution”. He further added “Narayana Hospital with its world class infrastructure, highly qualified doctors and dedicated paramedical staff is well equipped to provide treatment for all ailments and people of Jammu now don’t need to travel to Metro cities for treatment.”
