JAMMU, Jan 31: Dr Sapna Sangra, a faculty member at the University of Jammu and a UN Women CSO Steering Committee Member for the Beijing +30 Review, called upon Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to advocate for stronger institutional support for women’s rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
During the meeting, Dr Sangra emphasized the urgent need to revive the State Women Commission (SWC), which has remained defunct for a long time. She stressed that the existence of such institutions reflects the government’s seriousness in ensuring justice and equitable treatment for women.
“The revival of the State Women Commission is critical for addressing gender-based grievances and promoting systemic change. A fully functional Commission can provide necessary redressal mechanisms and work towards empowering women across the region,” Dr Sangra stated.
The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged the concerns raised and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to gender equality. He assured Dr Sangra that steps would be taken to restore the SWC and ensure its effective functioning in the near future.
The meeting underscored the importance of gender-sensitive governance and reinforced the need for institutional mechanisms to protect and promote women’s rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
