JAMMU, Feb 27: Dr Sapna Sangra, faculty at the University of Jammu and UN Women CSO Steering Committee Member for the Beijing+30 Review, met with National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijay Kishore Rahatkar in New Delhi.
During her meeting, Dr Sangra raised concerns over the absence of a State Women’s Commission (SWC) in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, stressing the urgent need for its reinstatement.
She highlighted the challenges faced by women, particularly in rural and border areas and emphasized the importance of institutional mechanisms for addressing gender-based violence, legal aid and policy advocacy.
Chairperson Rahatkar assured Dr Sangra of her commitment to women’s rights and acknowledged the urgency of the issue.
She affirmed that the NCW would take up the matter at the governmental level to expedite action towards re-establishing the SWC in J&K.
