Dr Soodan represents India at Nobel Peace Prize function

JAMMU, Dec 15: Making entire Jammu and Kashmir proud, Dr Surinder Singh Soodan, leading ophthalmologist of the State, represented India at Nobel Peace Prize function held at Oslo from December 8 to 12.
He led a delegation of eight people from India to participate in the function where International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2017.
Dr SS Soodan is the National president of Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD). Being an eminent figure in the field of Medical Sciences, Dr Soodan was the first doctor from the State to be invited for such a prestigious event on a global front.
IDPD is an affiliate of International Physicians for Peace and Development (IPPNW), a receipt of Nobel Peace award 1985. IPPNW was a sponsor of ICAN.
Addressing a press conference here today, Dr Soodan informed that this year the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to ICAN on December 10 by the King and Queen of Norway at Peace Hall, Oslo which he attended. “The ICAN was sponsored in 2007 by IPPNW and Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) is its affiliate in India,” he said.
“The ICAN was selected to receive this honor for its work to raise awareness about humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and for promoting the United Nations General Assembly approved treaty prohibiting the nuclear weapons from the face of earth,” Dr Soodan said.
Dr Soodan belongs to the first batch of MBBS graduating from Government Medical College, Srinagar. A topper of diploma in ophthalmology from AMU Aligarh, he further passed his Masters in Ophthalmology in the year 1968 and has ever since spent his life working with utmost dedication and sincerity in serving the society.
He has also served as ex- Principal of Acharya Chandra College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS), Jammu and is presently working as Advisor of the same Institute.
