JAMMU, Dec 15: In a major achievement in the field of Medical Science, a research paper on Retinal Detachment by Dr Yog Raj Sharma from Jammu and others has been selected among top 100 publications worldwide in the last 120 years.
This is the only paper selected from India in a very rigorous study published in American Society of Retina Specialists Journal -21. Out of 130 countries, only 19 countries have been listed among the top 100 publications on Retinal Detachment.
It is a big honour to India, AIIMS and more particulary for Jammu, the motherland of Dr Yog Raj, who is lead author of the research paper.
“It is awesome to be in this list of 100 best papers in over 100 years and only one from India. Each author deserves dozen Padma Shris for this great achievement,” said Dr Yog Raj, while talking to the Excelsior on telephone from United States, where he is staying with his son after superannuation from AIIMS, New Delhi.
A recipient of Padma Shri in 2015, Dr Sharma is an Indian Ophthalmologist and ex-Chief of Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He was the Chairman of the Task Force on Prevention and Control of Diabetic Retinopathy Group and the Co-Chairman of the National Task Force on Prevention of Blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. He was also an advisor to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India.
The historical publication on Retinal Detachment management was first published in 2005 in Acta Ophthalmologic Scandinavica. Besides Dr Yog Raj as the lead author, other authors of the publication are Dr Deependra V Singh (Corresponding author), Dr Sathiyan Karunanithi, Dr Rajvardhan Azad, Dr Nikhil Pal , Rajpal Vohra , Parijat Chandra, Dr Raja Rami and P Reddy .
Dr Reddy is founder MD of Neoretina Eyecare, Hyderabad and Dr Deependra is Senior Director of Retinal Services at Eye-Q hospitals India . The authors have used the current search engines for accuracy and the publication is worth a read by atleast every Retinal Surgeon or researcher in any other clinical areas. The sole citation from India was from AIIMS and all surgeries were done by Dr Yog Raj.
“I feel personally happy because my mother was operated for Retinal detachment in 1962 at Amritsar and besides being with head immobilized for three months with sandbags, the surgery failed and the traumatic experience led to serious psychological problems for two years. She would be happy to know that I along with RPC AIIMS colleagues have made some little contribution,” said Dr Yog Raj.
