SRINAGAR, Feb 25: High Court today directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the police to draw a time schedule for recording the statements of witnesses in the killing of two youth in 2010 police firing at Khanabal in Anantnag district.
Justice Janak Raj Kotwal directed the investigating agencies to draw a time schedule for recording the statement of witnesses sought to be produced by the informant and ensure that their statements are recorded as per the schedule without any inconvenience to the witnesses.
Two youths namely Bilal Ahmad Najar and Noor-ul-Amin Dagga were allegedly killed in police firing in 2010 when they were purportedly waiting outside a Masjid at Khanabal for offering funeral prayers of a student, Maroof Ahmad Shah, who had allegedly drowned after security forces had chased some persons in September that year.
The Bench directed that the exercise shall start latest by next date and interim status report be submitted by next date.
The court passed these directions following argument by the counsel for respondent that the witnesses were not willing to record their statements at Anantnag police station and Dak Bunglow.
However, the counsel of petitioners objected to the argument, stating that the witnesses do not have any objection in recording their statements at these two places.
Earlier, police was directed to re-constitute the SIT to inquire into the killings after the victims’ families had rejected the SIT, saying the team consisted of same members who were part of the earlier SIT.
The court had directed the SIT should be headed by a police officer who should not be below the rank of Superintendent of Police.
