JAMMU, Aug 9: Departmental Related Committee (DRC) of the Legislative Council has issued notice to the several departments to submit a detailed report giving reasons for the mysterious death of fishes in the Nageen lake of Valley.
Taking suo motu notice of mysterious deaths of fish in the Nageen lake of Kashmir valley, the Departmental Related Committee (DRC) of the Legislative Council directed the Fisheries Department to submit a detailed report giving the reason for the same as early as possible” Ravinder Kumar Sharma, chairman, DRC told Excelsior.
Sharma said that the department concerned had cited the soaring temperatures as the main cause, but committee is of the opinion that there might some other reason for the fish mortality.
Fisheries Department has been directed to prepare the report and submit it before the next meeting of the Committee, scheduled to be held in the upcoming, so as to take appropriate action in this regards, Sharma added.
“After the submission of report by the Fisheries Department, the Committee will take appropriate action in this regards, so as to save the fish in the Nageen lake vis other lakes of the Kashmir valley”, Sharma opined.
He said that the direction were passed to the department in a meeting of the Committee to review the functioning of various departments including Department of Forest, Environment, Fisheries, Tourism, Power, Science and Technology, Hospitality and Protocol.
It is to mention here that a large number of fish have died in the Nageen lake last week. The department concerned had earlier said an unusually high temperature and then a sudden dip depleted the oxygen levels in the lake and that the pollution in the water body could be another reason.
