Dry cold weather continues in J&K; fog hits 9 trains, 3 flights

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, Jan 3: Intense dry cold weather continued in J&K while dense fog affected nine trains and three flights in Jammu region today.
Kashmir is reeling under intense dry cold weather as Dal, Nigeen, Wullar and all other lakes, streams and rivers froze in parts while the water level in them dropped alarmingly low due to very scant snowfall and that too only in the mountains so far this season.
Weatherman has forecast cloudy weather from January 4 to January 6, adding that this is unlikely to result in rain/snowfall in the plains.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius today as the minimum temperature while Gulmarg and Pahalgam had minus 3.8 degrees Celsius and minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 4. 6 degrees Celsius which is 1.7 below degrees Celsius normal for this time of the year.
Kupwara recorded a low of minus 5. 3 degrees Celsius which is 2.8 below degrees Celsius normal for this time of the year.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius which is 1.7 below degrees Celsius normal for this time of the year.
Leh town had minus 15.2 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 12.4 degrees Celsius and Drass minus 14 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.
Meanwhile, intense cold wave continued to grip Jammu region for the last couple of days. Fog has further added to the miseries of the people. The air, train and vehicular traffic has been hit during morning hours.
A MeT spokesman said that Jammu recorded a minimum temperatire of 7.0 degree Celsius, Katra town 4.4 degree c, tourist resort Bhaderwah 0.3 degrees, Batote town 2.6 degree c while Banihal town had minus 1.6 degree Celsius temperature today. The MeT has predicted dry weather during next four days in the region.
An official spokesman said that eight flights operated at Jammu Airport today and three were delayed during morning hours due to fog and poor visibility. He said Air India, Indigo and Spicejet flights arrived late than their scheduled time at Jammu Airport. However, no flight was cancelled or diverted.
A Northern Railways spokesman said that nine trains were badly affected and arrived late at Jammu Station due to fog in Northern India. He said Lohit Express arrived late by 19 hours at Jammu Station, Durg Express and Puja Express 11 hours late, Jhelum Express 10 hours, Malwa Express 9 hours, Happa late by three hours, Jhelum Express by two hrs while Hemkund, Jammu Mail and Tata Muri arrived late by an hour.
He further disclosed that departure of Lohit Express from Jammu station was delayed by 8 hours and Puja Express by 7 hours and 30 minutes.
The dense fog during the night and morning hours, continued to hit the vehicular traffic as well in the region. Many inter-state buses and long route trucks are arriving late by 2 to 3 hours from various Northern States in Jammu.
