Dutt seeks more time to surrender in Mumbai blast case

NEW DELHI :  Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt who has been awarded five years imprisonment in 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast case under the Arms Act, today moved the Supreme Court seeking more time to surrender.
Earlier, Dutt was given four weeks time by the Supreme Court to surrender to serve the remaining sentence of 42 months as he has already served 18 months.
He has also prayed to the apex court to keep its order of sentence in abeyance till the disposal of the mercy petition pending before the President of India.
Another convict, 71-year-old Zaibunissa has also approached the Supreme Court by way of a review petition praying to the apex court to reconsider its decision and convert her sentence into the one already undergone.
Both were convicted by TADA court for being in possession of illegal arms but both were acquitted of the charges of criminal conspiracy in the terrorist attack in Mumbai on March 12, 1993 which left 257 people dead.
The chairman of Press Council of India and retired Supreme Court judge Justice Markandey Katju has filed mercy petitions for grant of pardon to both Sanjay Dutt and Zaibunissa before the Governor of Maharashtra and the President of India. (AGENCIES)
