Arrested officer to be treated like militant

Srinagar, Jan 12: Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, today said that arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police, Davinder Singh, was booked under Unlawful Activities Act and will be treated like militants for his heinous crime.
Confirming the arrest of Singh during a press conference here today, Kumar said: “Yesterday during an operation in Shopian, one Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) was arrested along with two wanted Hizbul Mujahideen militants, while they were travelling together in a vehicle on National Highway.”
He said the arrested officer is being interrogated by all the security agencies and will be treated like the other arrested militants. “He was transporting these militants towards Jammu. Investigations are on into the motive behind transporting them. Since this is a sensitive issue, we are involving all the intelligence agencies including CID, IB and RAW in the investigations”, said Kumar.

“He (Davinder Singh) has worked on several anti-militancy operations. But circumstances under which he was arrested… is a heinous crime. That is why he is being treated at par with the militants,” he said, adding that further interrogation and investigation in the matter was underway.
“We had registered a case under FIR: 05/2020 (in Police Station Qazigund) under arms, ammunition and Unlawful Activities Act”, he said.
When asked about his alleged role in Parliament attack, Kumar said that as per police records he has no role. “We will investigate that aspect as well”, he added.
Sources said that Singh was taking the two militants -Naveed Babu alias Babar Azam, a resident of Nazneenpora in South Kashmir’s Shopian district and his associate Asif Ahmad – to Chandigarh for providing them accommodation there for a couple of months.
Sources said that a civilian Irfan Ahmad Mir was driving the vehicle when they were caught by the police at Al-Stop on National Highway in Kulgam district yesterday. “Mir has travelled to Pakistan 5 times on passport and police is now investigating whether Singh and Mir were helping the two militants in ex-filtration or planning an attack somewhere in mainland”, sources said.
They said that besides recovery of one AK-47 rifle, two pistols and two grenades from Singh’s residence, lakhs of rupees were also recovered. They said that militants had struck a deal of Rs 12 lakh with Singh for transportation, providing them accommodation and other related issues.
Sources further said that Singh was providing hideout to militants in Jammu during winters for last several years for which he was getting handsome amount of money.
They said that police was tracking DySP Davinder Singh when he reached Shopian few days back to pick up Naveed and Asif. “The trio including Mir stayed at Singh’s house in Srinagar for the night and police had laid nakas at Airport and NH-44”, sources said.
Meanwhile, multiple raids were carried out today, based on information from the arrested militants and Singh that led to a large hideout in Shopian district being busted.
Police said that based on a credible input, Shopian police along with security forces busted a militant hideout in the orchards of village Urpora, Shopian.
Police recovered incriminating materials including ammunition and other substances used by the militant. “A case FIR No.01/2020 under relevant Sections of law has been registered in Police Station Zainapora in this regard. The recovered incriminating material has been seized by the police and taken into records for the purpose of investigation”, police said.
And security forces arrested a youth who was missing from his residence for last few days in Kokernag area of South Kashmir. He has been identified as Shahid Shafi Dar son of Mohammad Shafi Dar of Brakpora Anantnag.
Security forces arrested him during cordon and search operation in village Nowgam Kokernag area of Anantnag district.
