Egypt requests France to remove statue

CAIRO, Dec 19:  Egypt has requested French authorities to pull down a statue in Paris showing French Egyptologist Jean Francois Champollion putting his foot on a pharaonic head.
“A letter has been sent to the French authorities to remove this statue and I’m confident that the French authorities will positively respond to the request,” state-run MENA news agency quoted Egyptian Minister of Culture Jaber Asfour as saying yesterday.
The statue of the French Egyptologist, who deciphered hieroglyphics in the 19th century, was built in 1875 and is located in main courtyard of the Collège de France in Paris.
Egyptian archaeologists have always condemned the statue and described it as humiliating and shameful. (PTI)
