Eid celebrated across Kashmir; clashes at few places

Srinagar, Sept 2: Eid-ul-Azha was today celebrated across Kashmir with religious fervor with people offering prayers in Masjids and Eidgahs.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti joined thousands of people to offer her Eid prayers at Syed Sahib in Sonwar area of Srinagar. She prayed for peace, prosperity and wellbeing of the people of the State on the occasion.

After offering Nimaz, Mehbooba interacted with the people and extended Eid greetings to them. People in large numbers later visited the Chief Minister at her residence and offered their Eid greetings.
Thanking the visitors, the Chief Minister wished them well and hoped that the festival brings along limitless joy and happiness to the people of the State.
Those who visited the Chief Minister included Ministers, legislators, public representatives, Government functionaries, prominent citizens, political workers and common people.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister visited Dara Shikoh Park at Bijbehara and offered Fateha to former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
And across Kashmir, people in large numbers, clad in colourful dresses, offered congregational prayers at Eidgahs, Masjids and other places where speakers threw light on the philosophy of celebrating the Eid.
Clashes broke out between groups of youths and security forces at few places in Kashmir valley after Eid prayers.
Clashes were reported from Srinagar, Anantnag and Sopore in the Valley after the culmination of congregational Eid prayers at these places.
Clashes broke out in Sopore town of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district. As soon as the Eid prayers concluded at Markazi Jamia Masjid Sopore youth held protest demonstrations at main bazaar area of the town and tried to march towards Main Chowk.
Later, the protesters clashed with police and paramilitary forces deployed in strength at Main Chowk area. Protesters pelted stones on security forces who fired teargas shells and pellets.
Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was placed under house arrest to prevent him from leading Eid congregation at Eidgah.
A spokesman of the outfit said that a police party reached at the Nigeen residence of the Mirwaiz and placed him under detention.
