SRINAGAR, Sept 21: With just four days away, the shopping for Eid-ul-Adha or Bakar Eid has began in Kashmir valley with markets being thronged by shoppers in city and other townships of Valley.
The markets in the region were today abuzz with shoppers – mainly women and children. The Valley’s commercial hub – Lal Chowk – witnessed sizable rush of people resulting in intermittent traffic jam. People were seen buying garments, shoes and bakery. Traditionally Kashmiris consume a large chunk of bakery and confectionary on Eid and mutton is no exception.
The sale of sacrificial animals has also begun in the city and elsewhere. Even though several places have been fixed for selling the sacrificial animals but traditionally Eidgah ground in downtown is the ideal place.
Nomads who come from mountainous regions of the state including Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar and Kangan have put their cattle on sale at Eidgah. A sizeable number of people in city prefer Eidgah for purchasing sacrificial animals.
Compared to other years, the last two Eid occasions have witnessed a decline in shopping as people were hit by devastating floods in September 2015 which resulted in a big blow to economy of the Valley. However, the shopkeepers this time are hoping for spike in sales.
