JAMMU, Jan 6: Furthering his commitment towards raising awareness towards the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Sushil Sharma, HoD Cardiology, GMC, Jammu along with his team of doctors and volunteers conducted a health camp for the inmates of Old Age Home, Ambphalla. “Health issues are of major concern for every senior citizen, irrespective of their social or economic background but when it comes to the people living in old age homes it assumes varying proportions,” said Dr. Sushil adding that, gradual nuclearization of the joint family, changes in the value system and migration of youth to urban areas for work are important factors responsible for the marginalisation of older people. “This is reflected in the transition from the traditional ways of life to modern patterns, which require many compromises and adjustments. One of these involves old age homes. The old age population living in such establishments faces double jeopardy, firstly due to ageing process and secondly, feeling of being in isolation. It puts heavy toll not only on their physical health but also encapsulates emotional and psycho-social dimension within it. By the year 2020, it is anticipated that one in three deaths in developing countries will be through causes related to old age, and that the majority of these deaths will be from non-contagious diseases such as cardiovascular system disorders, cancers and diabetes, he highlighted,” Dr Sharma said.
During his interaction, Dr. Sushil said that the ageing is an unavoidable stage of the life. “The increase in the life expectancy and with the advancement of the health care facilities the share of the ageing population is going to rise. The ageing of the population has brought with it new and serious issues and consequently such issues need to be addressed at national and international level. The health care system must plan policies and actions for the weak and susceptible elderly population aiming to protect the self respect of the elderly people especially in the developing countries like India, were proper management of health sector is still inadequate and old age population cohort will add to the burden,” he added.
During the camp, the team checked blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, ECG and also provided psychological counselling services to the people. Medicines were also given as per the requirement.
Others, who were instrumental in this awareness cum health check up camp included, Dr. Arvind Kohli (Cardiac Surgeon) and Dr. Dhaneshwar Kapoor, Paramedics and Volunteers, who were part of the team, included Kamal Kishore, Harvinder Singh, Raj Kumar, Rajinder Singh , Rajeev Vohra , Gourav Sharma, Akshay Kumar, Rohit Khajuria and Vikas Kumar.
