Electoral Bond Reform

Sir,
I write to express my concern over the Electoral Bonds Scheme (EBS), currently under scrutiny by the Supreme Court. While introduced with the intent of fostering transparency in political funding, EBS has raised serious questions about its impact on democratic principles.
The selective secrecy allowed by EBS undermines the public’s right to information, contradicting the constitutional entitlement outlined in Article 19(1). The potential for undue influence and the lack of restrictions on foreign contributions pose additional threats to the democratic process.
To address these issues, I urge the implementation of reforms such as full disclosure of bond donations to the Election Commission, a cap on individual purchases, real-time transparency through an independent body, and prohibition of foreign funding. These measures, while respecting privacy, would bolster accountability and safeguard democratic values.
The Supreme Court’s decision holds immense significance for India’s democracy, and I trust it will pave the way for a more transparent and just political funding system.
