Electric vehicles’ progress in India

Sir,
Nantoo Banerjee’s article highlights the declining production costs of electric vehicles (EVs) and India’s encouraging EV policy.
As Union Minister Nitin Gadkari pointed out, the reduced need for Government subsidies, thanks to lower GST and increasing consumer demand, is promising.
However, while the EV market shows great potential, it’s important to ensure the growth is sustainable and not reliant on foreign imports, especially given China’s dominance in this sector.
India must focus on strengthening its domestic EV manufacturing ecosystem, reducing dependence on imports, and fostering technological innovation.
A robust infrastructure for charging stations and lithium-ion battery production is also crucial. With strategic planning, India can position itself as a global leader in EV manufacturing while ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits.
