Ellaquai Dehati Bank looted by gunmen in South Kashmir

SRINAGAR:  Unidentified gunmen today looted a branch of Ellaquai Dehati Bank in South Kashmir district of Kulgam, official sources said.

The incident comes a day after seven people, five policemen and two J&K Bank employees, were killed when Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants fired at a cash van in Kulgam.

They said two gunmen entered Ellaquai Dehati Bank in Kader Yaripora in Kulgam. The gunmen later looted cash from the bank after threatening employees and other customers at the gun point.

The exact number of cash looted from the bank was being ascertained, they said, adding that security forces have rushed to the area and launched a massive hunt to nab the looters.

Over a dozen banks have been looted in South Kashmir during this year by the gunmen.

On April 28, security forces foiled an attempt by masked men to rob a bank branch near Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag office. One of the accused was arrested while the other managed to escape. One CRPF personnel was also injured in the incident.  (AGENCIES)
