JAMMU, Feb 4: Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu today organized a special extension lecture by eminent journalist Rahul Jalali on the theme “Mass media and its role in India’s developmental journey”.
In his lecture, Mr Jalali who has over 35 years rich experience in Journalism having worked with various newspapers, discussed in detail the role of mass media in India’s developmental journey right from the post-Independence era. He said the history of mass media and its role in India’s development could be divided into three parts, from 1947 to mid-70’s , from mid-70’s to 1990s and 1990s up to present times.
Mr Jalali, a guest faculty at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), said media especially newspapers in India played a very significant role in shaping up of an independent India. In this regard, he gave a reference of the land reforms in Jammu and Kashmir which were highlighted in the national newspapers and were used as a point of reference by other Indian states.
Throwing light on the stages of development in India and role of the mass media in it, he said media also focused on the thrust for job opportunities, poverty alleviation schemes, transferring funds to the developmental schemes for India’s poor etc. Mr Jalali who also wrote for Australian Financial Review, ABC Radio besides TV and radio in Australia, also discussed Amartya Sen’s concept of economic development and other developmental theories.
Earlier Prof Poonam Dhawan, Head of Department/Director DLL welcomed Mr Jalali who has remained president of Press Club of India, New Delhi twice. Dr Kavita Suri, Associate Professor, coordinated the programme while DLL faculty members Dr Priyanka Sharma, Dr Pallavi Sachdeva, Dr Bharti Prabhakar, Dr Sandeep Singh and Dr Vivek Sharma were also present on the occasion.
