The update to the Government’s free coaching scheme marks a significant step toward inclusivity and educational empowerment. By extending high-quality coaching to PM CARES beneficiaries, along with students from Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes, the initiative ensures that financial constraints and socioeconomic backgrounds do not hinder academic and professional aspirations. Originally launched during the Sixth Five-Year Plan, the free coaching scheme has evolved to address changing educational needs and socio-economic challenges. The latest revision eliminates caste and income-related restrictions for PM CARES beneficiaries, ensuring that orphaned and vulnerable children under the scheme receive equitable opportunities. This policy shift reflects the Government’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive educational framework that prioritises merit and needs over socio-economic barriers.
The scope of the coaching program is commendable, encompassing a diverse range of competitive examinations. Additionally, by incorporating coaching for defence exams such as NDA and CDS, the scheme reinforces the country’s commitment to nurturing talent for national service. With 3,500 seats allocated annually-70percent for SC students and 30percent for OBC students-the scheme ensures substantial representation. The 30percent reservation for female candidates further strengthens gender inclusivity, encouraging more women to pursue competitive careers. Financially, the scheme offers crucial support by covering coaching fees ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 75,000 per student. Additionally, a monthly stipend of Rs 4,000 for up to 12 months will help students manage living expenses. The extra Rs 15,000 grant for Civil Services and State Services interview preparation underscores the Government’s commitment to seeing students through to the final stage of selection. The implementation, overseen by the Dr.Ambedkar Foundation in collaboration with Central Universities, ensures credibility and accountability. By requiring biometric attendance, monthly progress reports, and an online learning management system, the scheme integrates technology for better monitoring and efficiency. The provision to discontinue funding for underperforming institutions reinforces a results-driven approach. The Government is paving the way for a more equitable and meritocratic society. The challenge now lies in ensuring effective implementation, widespread awareness, and sustained quality to truly transform the lives of these students.
