SRINAGAR, June 9: Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar today impressed upon the Jammu and Kashmir Government to ensure proper implementation of Panchayati Raj Act for effective and accountable governance in the State.
Addressing a seminar on transparent administration and role of Panchayati Raj institutions at Budgam, Aiyar said “it is sad that Sarpanchs and Panchs have not been given enough powers by the State Government, adding Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should draw a blue-print for the implementation of the Panchayati Raj Act at the grassroots level”.
“The State Government must start mapping in order to ensure delegation of powers to the panchayats. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah must take advantage of the peaceful situation in the state and start the process of empowering Panchayats. It is the State Government that has to decide whether they want to extend 73rd Amendment or not,” said Aiyar.
