JAMMU, Mar 31: Founder Convener of Jammu Tawi Andolan, Chander Mohan Sharma has expressed shock to see that climate change, environment protection, water bodies conservation, deforestation are nonissues in the agenda of the campaign for Lok Sabha elections in the State.
“Our State has been blessed by the nature with beautiful lakes, mountains, valleys, meadows, rivers and springs of world-wide acclaim. At present, the rampage and uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources by different mafias has caused devastation. Recently, our State witnessed devastating flood and risk of further danger of natural calamities is also looming large. These mafias have support from persons enjoying political powers,” Sharma said this while addressing media persons here.
He further said, our judiciary particularly J&K High Court has given number of directions to the State Government and its different departments for protection of forest, lakes, rivers and other water bodies but so far State instruments have failed to comply these directions.
“This is a matter of great concern for the public. It was expected that the campaigns for the election 2019 will focus on these issues. Natural calamities are not less dangerous than terrorism etc,” Sharma said adding that unfortunately, political parties have failed to include these vital issues in their vision for future of the State.
He also quoted a media report about aquatic life in Surinsar and Mansar lakes which is under severe threat due to water pollution.
