JAMMU, Sept 22: In its annual general body meeting, Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens (AWSC) unanimously elected Er S K Gupta as president for 2014-16 term.
Verinder Gupta and BM Kohli were elected as vice presidents and R C Gupta the general secretary with Chander Parkash Sharma and Abrol as Joint Secretaries and Mengi as Treasurer.
AWSC members highlighted the problems being faced by the elderly people all over the State with the Government turning a blind eye to even adopting National Policy on Older People (NPOP) of 1999 and ‘Maintenance of Parents/Elders Act 2007 as has been done by almost all the states of the country.
The Government has, however, approved the allotment of 8-kanals of land to AWSC for building a multipurpose residential cum day-care centre of the senior citizens. The land has so far not been finally handed over to AWSC by the Directorate of Social Welfare Department.
