JAMMU, Sept 20: The Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) organised a workshop on Gender issues in Infrastructure Develop-ment Projects at Indian Institute of Public Administra-tion, J&K Regional branch here today.
Vikas Sharma, Social and Resettlement expert of ERA announced the workshop open and invited Dr Sanjeev Chadha, the Project Manager, Hydraulics, to educate the gathering about the subject. Dr Chadha introduced about the project Jammu Kashmir Urban Sector Develo-pment Investment Program (JKUSDIP) and gender issues.
Chief guest, Dr (Prof) Ved Kumari Ghai, retired professor of Jammu University in her inaugural address spoke on both gender and hygiene awareness issues as women are mainly responsible for caring all at home and for all the household chores related to infrastructure. She also emphasized that we should care for our environmental sanitation. She emphasised that in our country since olden age women are being respected. She added that women in our country are esteemed by the social reformers. She also mentioned about social safeguard issues.
Ravinder Kumar Raina, Director Jammu expresses his views on the workshop. He described the JKUSDIP, Ecorys India Pvt Ltd, the Gender Action Plan (GAP) and Community Awareness Program (CAP) consultants.
Suresh Tomar, an expert from Madhya Pradesh screened a short slide show highlighting women’s achievements. The presentation highlighted the difference between sex and gender- the social differences between men and women; gender equality and so on.
Azizur Rahman, Gender and Development expert from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), made presentation. He introduced ADB and spoke on gender mainstreaming in urban infrastructure project, policies of the Bank and GAP implementation. Dr Vijay Saigal spoke on legal provisions and new amendments in IPC.
Rupa Adhya, Gender expert, Ecorys India Pvt Ltd presented achievements of GAP implementation.
PN Bali, Director Safeguards, then welcomed all the dignitaries, staff and all participants who were present. About 90 participants attended the workshop.
