POONCH, Jan 23: A noted criminal who escaped from police custody in the court premises at Mendhar on Friday was nabbed by police from Balakote area this afternoon.
A senior police official said that a history sheeter, Tahir Hussain Shah, son of Bagdad Hussain Shah hailing from Gohlad village in Mendhar escaped from the court complex at Mendhar yesterday. He had been brought from District Jail Poonch to produce before the Munsiff at Mendhar in connection with some criminal cases.
Giving slip to five police men including an ASI, he escaped from custody. Five police men including an ASI were placed under suspension by District Police authorities late evening for the lapse.
SSP Poonch, JS Johar sent police teams to different locations to trace the fleeing criminal. He was today nabbed within 24 hours from the forest area in Balakote at around 2 pm by police party led by SI Kapil Manhas and SOG team men led by ASI Shabir Ahmed. He was then brought to Mendhar Police Station under tight security and placed in the lock up.
