This has reference to BJP opposes ‘police powers to NCTC’ DE Feb 26.
The recent twin blast in Hyderabad has once again brought focus on NCTC (National Counter Terrorism Centre). The brain child of former Home Minister P. Chidambaram NCTC could not take off as it got embroiled into controversy following apprehension by the opposition and some State Chief Ministers that the Centre may impinge on their authority.
Despite hectic lobbying, the NCTC got buried in the files. It has once again come into focus following Hyderabad blasts. There is urgent need to give it a final shape to counter the growing menace of terrorism in the country.
There are general apprehension that the Central agencies may abuse powers enshrined in NCTC provisions.
The Central Government must alloy the apprehension of the State Government with regard to its functioning. It may be said here that terrorism can be countered only if the Centre and the State Governments work in tandem.
