CAG has reported that the store of Estate Department has not been physically verified for last three years. On the basis of entries in the stock registers and the items actually accounted for, it has come to the conclusion that the cost of missing items can be computed to around 2.44 crore rupees. This loss is inflicted directly on the tax payer. But the question is where the stocks have evaporated in the thin air if these do not exist where these should be. The Estates Department is known for its controversial role and the rot which lies there in the department. Only a few days ago we had taken up the irregularities of Estates Department and said that the organization needs overhauling in a manner that numerous irregularities attributed to it are brought to the public domain for open debate. There are many complaints that Evacuee houses have been allotted to blue-eyed persons on nominal rent. Missing articles, being the property of the Estate Department, have remained unaudited and unverified. Departmental inquiry has to be ordered to find out where items worth over 2 crore rupees have gone? Estates Department cannot escape the responsibility of mismanagement and lack of security of its stores.
