Ex-CBI Chief denies Dawood’s surrender offer

NEW DELHI, May 2:  A retired Chief of the CBI Vijay Rama Rao has falsified the claim made by its Ex-Deputy Inspector-General Neeraj Kumar, that dreaded underworld don and US-declared global terrorist Dawood Ibrahim was prepared once  to surrender before the authorities.
However, this could not happen owing to the authorities’ unwillingness to  accept his conditional offer.
Mr Rao has declared that  Mr Kumar’s claim was not based on recorded facts. CBI sources also confirmed that there was no written proof in support of Kumar’s claim.
The claim that Dawood was willing to surrender has been made in a just published book authored by Kumar. He says that he came to know of this reality when he interacted with the don in June 1994. When Dawood made the offer, he also wanted a guarantee for his safety after his surrender come through. But the CBI authorities then rejected his condition, Mr Kumar added.
The former CBI Deputy Inspector-General had headed  the team that was constituted to enquire into the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai. According to the former CBI Chief, the investigating agency had made all kinds of efforts  to catch hold of Dawood, but it could not be possible. Never ever  any officer denied permission from him for using any tactic to arrest the global terrorist, he claimed.
Dawood was the real brain behind the 13 bomb blasts that rocked Mumbai on March 12, 1993, resulting in 257 deaths and left over 700 persons injured. Well-known legal luminary Ram Jethamalani also claimed some time ago that Dawood had called him with his offer to surrender. But the authorities were not ready for it. (UNI)
