Ex DG IIMC interacts with Jammu students, asks them to be ‘factivists’

JAMMU, Aug 10: Prof K G Suresh, former DG, IIMC & the Vice Chancellor of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, Bhopal today interacted with the students of IIMC Jammu on the topic ‘Current trends and future of Media’ and shared valuable insights based on his decades of experience to guide them in the field of media.
Prof Suresh told the students that admission in IIMC Jammu places them with a unique advantage which is not available to students in metro cities. He asked them to use this opportunity and focus on developmental journalism and other unique opportunities that Jammu offers.
He emphasized the importance of being factual and adhering to truth and accuracy as a journalist. “The emerging journalist must be a jack of all trades, just like the old times, however, must obtain mastery in one,.” He suggested and guided students to hone their skills with continuous practice. He also threw light on the need to read literature to enhance language and uplift the standard. He urged the students to dig deep, research, and become full-fledged ‘factivists’.
Prof Suresh also talked about the changing ownership patterns of the means of mass communication and said one no longer has a monopoly of audience. He added that one can now reach millions of people through YouTube channels and social media platforms without any need of expensive setup.
Dr Dilip Kumar, Regional Director of IIMC Jammu shared what Prof Suresh inspired him throughout his career in the field of journalism as well as academics.
Dr Ravia Gupta concluded the session with a beautiful gratitude note that she penned for Prof Suresh. The session was moderated by Dr Vinit Utpal, Assistant Professor and Special Officer, Student Welfare, IIMC Jammu.
The event was also graced by Dr Jai Prakash Verma, Regional Director, IGNOU, Jammu. Other attendees included Dr Vishal Sharma, HoD, Department of Electronics & IT, Government College for Women, Udhampur; Vishav, Assistant Professor, Gulshan Kumar and Rajeev Kumar, Academic Associate.
