Ex-militant held for extortion

KISHTWAR, Feb 17: Police arrested a surrendered militant of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) in extortion case.
SSP Kishtwar Yougal Manhas said that a surrendered militant identified as Mohammad Jaffar Sheikh, son of late Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, a resident of Dool was arrested from Cherhar area for extorting money from NHPC employee.
Giving details of the case, he said that the surrendered militant threatened a NHPC employee namely Nazir Ahmed Lone (complainant) of kidnapping his son (a class 8th student) if he (NHPC employee) failed to pay him Rs 10 lakh. The ex-militant also took away the mobile phone of the complainant, SSP added.
Fearing trouble and life threat, the NHPC employee did not report the matter to police as the accused posed himself as militant of Lashkar group, he said.
Mustering courage, NHPC employee reported the matter to police station Kishtwar and the accused was arrested from Cherhar area, SSP added.
A case under FIR number 21/15 under Section 458, 382 and 506 RPC, 7/25 IA Act and 4/25 IA Act against the accused was registered at police station Kishtwar and investigation started to ascertain whether the accused was involved in this case of extortion alone or with some other associates, Mr Manhas maintained.
“Mohammad Jaffar is an ex-militant of HuM, who remained active in Kishtwar district from 1992 to 1997. In the year 1997, he surrendered before police and was found involved in a murder case of Master Gurshar Ahmed Bhat and a civilian Nazir Ahmed of Dool area registered under FIR No 54/97 under Sections 364, 302, 34 RPC and 3/25 IA Act with police station Kishtwar. Mohammad Jaffar remained in jail for 7 years and was acquitted by the Court in this murder case in year 2005”, SSP disclosed.
Police team led by SHO Kishtwar police station Inspector Sumeer Jeelani made the arrest under the supervision of Additional SP Kishtwar Abdul Qayoom and SSP Kishtwar Yougal Manhas.
