SRINAGAR, Mar 20: A former legislator and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader, Faqir Mohammad Khan, today shot himself dead in Tulsibagh area of Srinagar district.

An official said that former MLA Gurez, Khan, shot himself at Tulsibagh Srinagar at his quarter today. He said that Khan succumbed before taking him to hospital, however, reasons behind taking this extreme step weren’t immediately known.
Khan, who was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 1996 as an Independent candidate, had joined BJP in 2020 and unsuccessfully contested the Assembly polls on the party ticket last year.

A police spokesman in a statement said here that an incident of firearm discharge was reported today in the Tulsibagh area of Srinagar, resulting in the death of former legislator Faqir Mohammad Khan, son of Jumma Khan, a resident of Gurez.
The spokesman said that police has taken cognizance of the matter, and legal proceedings under Section 194 of the BNSS have been initiated at Police Station Shergarhi.
“Initial findings suggest the incident appears to be a case of suicide. Further investigation is ongoing, considering all aspects,” the spokesman added.
Khan’s family members and relatives were inconsolable at his residence. There was an atmosphere of grief, with mourners wailing as news of his death spread. Political leaders and supporters from various backgrounds visited his residence to offer condolences.
A supporter of the BJP leader outside his residence in Tulsi Bagh said that he was in shock after hearing the death of Khan. “We have known Faqeer Khan for a long time. He was a dedicated leader. When we heard the news, we rushed to Tulsi Bagh, but we still can’t believe it,” he said.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has condoled the sad demise of the former legislator.
“Faqeer Mohammad Khan’s contribution to the development of Gurez is immense and he touched and improved thousands of lives. On this extremely sad occasion, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and followers. I pray for his soul,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed grief over the demise of former legislator Faqeer Mohammad Khan.
In a post on X, Office of CM Omar Abdullah wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of former legislator Faqeer Mohd Khan. He was a true grassroots leader. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
