Excise tax evasion surfaces in liquor smuggling case

KATRA, June 20: Excise Tax evasion has surfaced in the smuggling of illicit liquor, which was seized by Katra Police, a few days back.
During the investigation carried out so far and the correspondence done by the Excise Department, it has come to the light that apparently the seized illicit liquor was being sold in open market without paying Excise Duty. Whole consignment of the seized liquor has been examined by Inspector Excise Sub range Udhampur and report has been submitted to ETO Doda Udhampur Range by him.
According to Police, the Deputy Excise Commissioner (Executive) Jammu has directed to ETO Doda Udhampur Excise Range to enquire into the matter and furnish report, especially giving detail regarding batch number, manufacturing date, name of manufacturing unit and serial No. of Hologram if affixed. In addition to this, the ETO has also been asked to ascertain source of purchase of illicit liquor, related to which report was published in Daily Excelsior.
Further ETO Doda Udhampur Range has requested SHO Katra to provide the details regarding the seizure of illicit liquor along with two sample of seized liquor to check its genuineness.
In this matter, Inspector Excise Sub range Udhampur visited Police Station Katra and examined the consignment seized under FIR No. 96/2015. As per the report, submitted to ETO Doda Udhampur range, the seized liquor was manufactured by M/s Rockland Distilleries Pvt Limited, Bari Brahmana Jammu and M/s Ransan Industries Gangyal Jammu. As per the report of Inspector Excise, the seized illicit liquor does not have any Batch Number, manufacturing date and Security Hologram.
The Deputy Excise Commissioner distilleries Jammu has also requested to SDPO Katra to provide the detail of illicit liquor stock, seized by Police Station Katra.
As reported by the Excelsior, FIR No.96/2015, under Section 48-A Excise and 188/RPC was registered in Police Station Katra following seizure of 416 Poly Pouches of J&K Excise liquor, measuring 250/250 ml each. Accused persons, namely Vishal Sharma of Ward number 11, near Mahadev Mandir Reasi and Rakesh Sharma @ Raju Gunda of Matyal, Katra were arrested in this connection. Another accused, namely Rakesh Kumar @ Manu of Mari, Reasi is still at large and efforts are on to nab him.
Meanwhile, in another success, a Police, led by SHO Reasi, Amod Ashok Nagpure (IPS) raided a house in village Lamsoora and recovered 25 litres illicit country made liquor besides around 100 litres Lahan. In this connection, one of the accused, namely Suram Singh was arrested while his associate Puran Singh managed to escape from the spot. The recovered liquor was seized while the Lahan was destroyed on the spot.
A case FIR No. 100/2015 U/S 48-A Excise Act has been registered in this connection at Police Station Reasi.
