JAMMU, Feb 11: In order to curb the menace of illicit distillation of liquor and illegal smuggling of liquor, the J&K Excise Department has intensified raids and checking of various locations to check the offences being committed.
Under the active supervision of Excise Commissioner, T. Angchuk and Deputy Excise Commissioner (Executive), Jammu Shahid Saleem, raids were conducted in Bishnah area of the Jammu district. More than 300 kilograms of Lahan and two bottles of illicit liquor were recovered and destroyed.
Later, the team visited the Arnea, Alla, Sumlair, Dublair, Chinaz and R.S.Pura areas to conduct a survey of the area in order to formulate a plan to tackle the menace of illicit distillation and narcotics smuggling.
The Excise Commissioner interacted with the locals to have a feedback regarding the illegal activities in the area, if any.
In separate raids, ETO Sandeep raided Barnoti and Chakdrabkhan area of the Kathua district and in the process two persons were arrested for illicit distillation. More than 1100 kilograms of Lahan and 350 pouches of illicit liquor made from lahan, which is highly hazardous and injurious to health, were recovered during the raids conducted which were later destroyed by the team on spot.
Action has been initiated under Section 48 of the Excise Act 1958.
The Excise Department has activated all of its wings and announced cash awards for the informers, on case to case basis to provide information with respect to illicit distillation of liquor and manufacture of liquor, illegal smuggling of liquor, Sale of narcotic drugs (Charas, Ganja, Opium and Cocaine), sale of Canteen Stores Department liquor in local market, liquor parties without valid permission from the Excise Department, cultivation of Bhang/Hep/Poppy plants on private land and any other violation of the Excise Laws.
