Expert committee to investigate Rainawari land sinking

SRINAGAR, June 25: In the wake of a recent incident of land sinking in the Khawajapora Syedpora area of Rainawari, the District Administration of Srinagar today formed an expert committee to investigate the matter and recommend remedial actions.

According to an order issued by Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Srinagar and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, a nine-member committee has been constituted.
The committee, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Syed Ahmad Kataria, has been tasked with determining the causes behind the sinking of several houses in Khawajapora Syedpora, Rainawari.
The committee has been directed to submit its findings within a week and propose measures to prevent further environmental damage, along with addressing other related issues of land subsidence in the area.
The expert committee includes members such as Prof. Gh. Jeelani from the University of Kashmir’s Earth Science department, Ghulam Hassan from SMC (Joint Commissioner, Planning), Shabir Ahmad from R&B (Executive Engineer, Core Division, Srinagar), Dr. Shakeel Waseem from NIT Srinagar (Assistant Professor, Structural Engineering), Syed Shahid Hussain (Tehsildar, Khanyar, Srinagar), Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir (SDPO, Khanyar, Srinagar), Mir Jehangir (Executive Engineer, Building & Design – II, Quality & Control, R&B Department, Srinagar), Zahoor Ahmad (Executive Engineer, Smart City, Srinagar), and Fayaz Ahmad Bhat (Geologist-III, Geology & Mining Department, Srinagar).
It is important to note that the land sinking incident in the Khawajapora area of Rainawari was reported on Monday, prompting the relocation of several families to safer locations due to the severity of the situation.
As reported by locals, nearly six residential houses suffered damage when cracks appeared suddenly, first noticed on Eid day, June 17.
Residents had appealed to the district administration for prompt assessment of damages, identification of reasons for the land sinking, and implementation of necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the affected residents.
