JAMMU, Oct 27: Railways police today foiled a plan of militants to possibly trigger an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast and recovered 18 detonators and explosive material concealed in two tins of Amul near a drain at Taxi Stand of Jammu Railway Station.
Police were alerted after an abandoned bag was found in an ‘nallah’ (drain) near the taxi stand.

A police team rushed to the spot and took possession of the bag. It contained 18 detonators, some wires and around 500 grams wax-type material packed in two 500 and 400 ml tins of Amul, Senior Superintendent of Police (Railways) Arif Rishu told the Excelsior.
“We are investigating it (whether it was a fabricated IED). There is no powder like material, only a wax-type material. It was not a ready IED as detonators were in a separate box,” he said.
However, it could have been converted into an IED but the attempt was foiled as police seized the explosive material well in time.
Rishu said a possible untoward incident has been foiled.
“Had they been able to execute it fully, there could have been an untoward incident but we foiled that as we are alert,” he said.
The SSP said there was no specific input related to the recovery of the explosive material.
The security setup has already been tightened in the wake of the festival period. Checking and frisking was intensified and cameras were installed, he said.
Some people were trying to trigger an act of sabotage but alertness of the security forces has prevented their designs, Rishu said.
He said police have registered an FIR into the matter and initiated investigation.
The tins had been concealed inside a deep drain near Taxi Stand of Jammu Railway Station and they came out during cleaning. An alert was immediately sounded after the recoveries and area was cordoned off. A Bomb Disposal Squad also reached the spot.
“The material has been seized for investigations,” the officials said, adding it was yet to be ascertained how the explosives reached near the Taxi Stand.
The trains could have been a target and, in view of this, checking has been intensified all along the tracks. Passengers are also being frisked, they said.
Sources believed that some Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of the militants might have brought explosive material and detonators and dumped them inside the deep drain to pick up them at later stage.
CCTV footage in and around the Taxi Stand of Jammu Railway Station is being examined to reach to the accused.
Intelligence agencies have reports that some militant outfits are exploiting the Over Ground Workers to carry out terror acts in otherwise peaceful Jammu region and the attempt to trigger IED blast in and around the Railway Station was part of the plot foiled by the police today.
