JAMMU, Jan 28: Army and police today recovered large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives in Kishtwar while explosives and ammunition of 1971 war was seized from village Berian on Sumbh road in Samba district.
Official sources said a civilian Vipan Kumar son of Jabru Ram, a resident of village Berian, about three kilometers from Samba noticed some rounds lying at village Berian this morning when he had gone to the fields. He informed police, which rushed to the spot along with security forces and dug out the area.
A large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot, which included 35 grenades of HE-36, four boxes full of 7.62 mm rounds, which were used in SLR, LMG and other weapons and three bags full of loose rounds. While one full box had 450 to 500 rounds, three bags had about 500 loose rounds.
The explosive devices and ammunition, according to sources, were dated back to 1971 war as an artillery unit had camped in the area and had also dug out bunkers there.
Police parties led by SHO Samba Inspector Ravinder Parihar have seized entire ammunition and explosives for investigations.
Meanwhile, troops of Delta Force and Kishtwar police carried out joint search operation in Sarthal area of Kishtwar district today and destroyed a hideout of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit.
A large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the hideout, which included one AK-56 rifle with seven magazines, one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL), three rifles of 12 bore, 515 rounds of 7.62mm, 27 grenades of UBGL, 14 hand held grenades, one binocular, one magazine pouch, one blanket and ration.
A major terror plot has been foiled with recovery of arms and ammunition, sources said.
The GOC Delta Force has complimented the troops, who made the recoveries.
