Facebook says deleted over 50 ‘inauthentic’ Iran-linked accounts

MOSCOW, May 29: US tech giant Facebook said on Tuesday it had deleted over 50 “inauthentic” accounts associated with Iran.
“Today we removed 51 Facebook accounts, 36 Pages, seven Groups and three Instagram accounts involved in coordinated inauthentic behavior that originated in Iran. The individuals behind this activity – which also took place on other internet platforms and websites – misled people about who they were and what they were doing,” the company said in a statement.
According to Facebook, the account holders represented themselves as journalists and tried to contact politicians, reporters, scholars, Iranian dissidents and other public figures.
The pages were in English or Arabic and “without a focus on a particular country, although some Pages focused on the US or UK,” the company said.
It is noted that the topics of the messages on these pages included public figures, politicians of Washington and London, the separatist movements of the United States, Islam, Arab minorities in Iran and the influence of Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. The company stressed that accounts were removed not because of the content, but only because of behavior.
