Sir,
This refers to the article’Living with Epilepsy'(DE, Nov17, 2017).The article was informative and made an interesting reading. The writer,a reputed neurologist has beautifully and thoroughly described the causes, facts and misconceptions about epilepsy. He has also enumerated Do’s and Don’ts, about epilepsy and highlighted the precautions to be observed when the patient has a fit of epilepsy, such as avoiding forcing or inserting anything in the mouth of the patient, which people generally do.What is most interesting is that the learned writer has mentioned the names of famous persons from history, such as Alfred Nobel, Pythagorus, Jonty Rhodes, Napolean Bonaparte etc who suffered from epilepsy and yet recorded enviable achievements in their respective fields. All this proves that this disease is curable and posed no obstacles to their achievements. Thus, a person suffering from epilepsy can live a normal life and he /she can marry and produce children.
Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions associated with epilepsy. Some superstitious people ascribe this disease to evil spirits or supernatural forces and seek the help of quacks for treatment of epilepsy. Thus, mass awareness needs to be created among the masses in order to dispel myths and misconceptions about epilepsy. The writer has done a yeoman’s service in writing this highly informative article on eve of National Epilepsy Day and more such articles should be published in the newspapers to create awareness among people about this neurological disorder.
Yours etc…
