Fake gold traders’ racket busted, 2 held

2 ‘gold’ bricks recovered

KATHUA, July 14: With the arrest of two racketeers, the police busted a racket of fake gold traders in Basohli area and recovered two bricks of `gold’ weighing nearly 900 gms each today.
Acting on a specific information that two un-known traders were selling gold very cheap to the local people by producing sample that it was pure gold, the police party from Basohli police station under the supervision of SDPO Basohli Mohd Rafiq conducted a raid and took both the traders into custody.
The police also seized two bricks of gold from their possession. The gold was then sent for examination to the local goldsmiths, who found it as fake. Both the accused were arrested and a case was registered against them. They were identified as Mohd Aslam, son of Mohd Rafiq, resident of Marha Patti (Basohli) and Manzoor Hussain, son of Jamat Ali, resident of Maggar Khud Kathua.
During interrogation, they told police that they brought this `gold’ from Mathura in Uttar Pardesh on very cheap rate of Rs 1000 per brick. They also revealed that they sold the gold at the rate ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per 10 gms in Kathua, Billawar and Basohli area and earned good money. They used to provide sample from a corner of the brick which was pure part. Adopting this modus operandi they befooled gullible public and looted their money.
The police said a case FIR No. 48/2012 under Section 120 RPC was registered against them. Some more members of the gang have been identified and they will also be arrested within couple of day. The over all operation was conducted under the supervision of SSP Kathua, Atul Goel, the spokesman said.
