Fall in Indians convicted in US jails

The number of convicted Indian nationals languishing in the US jails saw a considerable fall in the fiscal 2013-14. US Immigration and Custom Enforcement provided this information to the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) in reply to a letter seeking information about the Indian nationals lodged in the US jails.
According to the information obtained under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), it was found that there was a considerable fall in the number of convicted Indian nationals in US jails between 2013 and 2014. In 2013, 149 Indian nationals were lodged in US jails as criminals, which dropped to 115 in 2014.
The same period also saw a drop in the number of non-criminals lodged in US jails from 288 in 2013 to 244 in 2014. Spokesperson and executive director of NAPA Satnam Singh Chahal stated that on the basis of information provided by the US body, of the 334 Indians removed, 135 were convicted criminals and 199 were of non-criminal nature where as during the same period 14 convicted criminals and 89 persons of non-criminal nature of Indian origin were returned to detention centres and jails.
