JAMMU, Dec 17: A farmer’s hand was successfully re-implanted by doctors at Ivy Hospital, Hoshiarpur recently.
The patient accidentally amputated his left hand while working on a woodcutting machine. He was rushed to Ivy Hospital on time with a severed hand and re-implantation surgery was performed successfully.
A team of doctors including Dr Sumit Toor (plastic and reconstructive surgeon), Dr Manpreet Kaur and Dr Harpreet Singh Atwal employed advanced microsurgical techniques for hand re-implantation. Dr Toor reconnected blood vessels, nerves, tendons, bones and tissues, showcasing the hospital’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical excellence.
Dr Toor said, “Patients with traumatic amputations often face significant physical and emotional challenges. The timely re-implantation can bring new hope in traumatic limb loss.” He further explained that preservation and proper transport of the amputated part are crucial aspects of re-implantation surgery along with the importance of the time.
The badly crushed injuries may not be suitable for re-implantation, but with osteoplastic reconstructive surgery that hand can be saved, he maintained. Post-surgery the patient can now look forward to a significantly improved quality of life, asserted Dr Toor.
