Farmers hold protest demonstration

UDHAMPUR, Apr 6: A large number of Kissans and Cocoon rearers held strong protest demonstration against the Government for its failure to mitigate the sufferings of the farming community.
Led by a senior Kissan leader and social activist Surat Singh Sumbria, a large number of farmers including the cocoon rearers assembled at Majalta and highlighted their demands in the wake of losses suffered by them in the recent heavy rains and natural calamity.
They demanded insurance cover for their crops as also the cocoons developed by them, so that they may not face any difficulty in future due to any natural calamity.
They also demanded development of Mandi for cocoons at Majalta as the cocoon rearers were finding it difficult either go to Udhampur or Billawar where Mandis for the same are located. They added that shed for rearing cocoons have been provided to undeserving persons and demanding an inquiry into the matter, they called for provision of the same for poor deserving cocoon rearers.
The farmers also demanded Girdawari of all the Shamshan Ghats in tehsil Majalta for the purpose of proper development and also saving the same from encroachments.
Those who addressed on the occasion besides Mr Sumbria included Lochan Singh, Rashpal Sharma, Hans Raj, Kaka Ram and Girdhari Lal.
Towards culmination the farmers also took out a strong procession raising slogans in support of their demands.
