Srinagar, May 16: Farmers of different villages of Palhalan area today protested at Pattan on Srinagar- Baramulla Highway in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district against alleged highhandedness of Irrigation Department and their lackadaisical approach in starting irrigation pumps.
Farmers from Palhallan and surrounding villages including Gundibraheem, Chakhjamalmir and Patl alleged that the authorities are turning deaf ear to their problems as their agriculture land is either waterlogged or dry and it need to be drained out and irrigated respectively.
“The sowing season is ending and they have not yet started the irrigation pumps which should be otherwise functional ten days ago” Abdul Majid Dar, a farmer, said.
The village elders accused the Irrigation officials of disrespecting them and using indecent language. “We initially went to the office of the Irrigation and Flood Control but they misbehaved with us and forced us to block the Highway,” they said.
Tehsildar Pattan, Sayeed Faheem and Station House Officer, Javeed Ahmad reached on the spot and pacified the protestors who dispersed peacefully.
