Farmers suffer heavy damage due to rains, hailstorm

SAMBA, Nov 28: Unseasonal rains and hailstorm last night have damaged standing crops in the thousands of acres of land putting the farming community to a heavy loss.
Gurcharan Singh and Sham Lal the farmers of Samba district said that with the unseasonal rains and hailstorm during last night the standing and harvested paddy crop in thousands of acres of land has been destroyed. They said that the farmers who were dependent on agriculture produce only have been put to a heavy loss.
Senior BJP leader, Arun Sharma who also visited various localities in the area was apprised by the farmers about the damage and loss suffered by them due to heavy rains and hailstorm. Sharma after listening the farmers’ problems has appealed the district administration Samba to assess the damages and submit a report to Government so that suitable compensation is provided to farming community. Farmers said that their future has become dark as on one side they suffered a heavy loss due to natural calamity and on the other the Government has reduced the price of farmers’ paddy crops from Rs 4500 quintal to Rs 2500.
The farmers said that they had taken loans from the banks, but due to the unseasonal rains and hailstorm they are unable to deposit the installment. Under the prevailing circumstances they are unable to pay the loan installments, they added.
The farmers have demanded that the district administration should inspect the fields and assess the damaged crops and the banks should waive off the farmers loans and Government should also pay the appropriate compensation.
Arun Sharma has also made an appeal to the Lieutenant Governor that farmers loans be waived off.
