Sir,
This refers to your editorial titled “Fate of twin smart cities” (DE dated Dec 19th 2018). The dream of smart cities can’t be achieved unless J&K Government is serious about scientific solid waste management in Jammu and Srinagar cities. Neither Jammu nor Srinagar will be a smart city unless land-filling sites are made on scientific pattern plus decentralizing them by creating various landfills in different areas / colonies in Jammu and Srinagar. In Jammu Baghwati Nagar landfill site is completely unscientific, so is the one at Achan in Srinagar.
Plastic and organic waste is lifted by municipal agencies in a mixed form and dumped at Achan and Baghwat Nagar which emits foul smell. In outskirts of Jammu like Akhnoor road or R S Pura road heaps of garbage can be seen that is not even been cleared. Same is the case with Srinagar outskirts like Ganderbal or Budgam. Enough budget must be allocated for waste management sector during execution of work for Smart Cities Jammu / Srinagar. First clear trash in Jammu and Srinagar then think of other developmental works
