JAMMU, Apr 5: Federation of Industries Jammu has raised serious concern over the Forest Department imposing ban on the manufacturing and trading of disposable items vide SRO No.231, dated 26-03-2019.
In a statement, the Federation chairman Lalit Mahajan said that by issuing such order the Government has not given any reasonable thought as there are around 5-6 manufacturing industries in Jammu and around 2-3 industries in Kashmir which are manufacturing disposable article like plates, cups, bowls, glasses, spoons, forks etc from non biodegradable material which is mainly plastic. All these industries are registered as small scale industries in the State of Jammu and Kashmir by the Department of Industries and Commerce Jammu and Kashmir with the Investment of 80 to 100 crore, having 3000 employees working in these industries.
“These Industries are supplying material in Jammu and Kashmir only beside there are around 400-500MT of such disposable articles are coming in the State from outside J&K and are sold by around 300-400 traders in Jammu and Kashmir. The traders in Jammu and Kashmir too have a work force of round 5000 employees working with them and we can say that around 8000-10000 families are surviving on this industry and trade in Jammu and Kashmir,” Lalit Mahajan explained.
He further said that the blanket ban on such items without taking any logical basis, not given any thought and shall amount to closure of such industries and trade besides the mentioned work force shall be out of jobs and deprive them of their right to livelihood. The Industries Department in J&K has issued permission to such industries to manufacture these items and Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Board has also issued consent to operate and manufacture these disposable items from time to time for the last 12-15 years.
We request Governor Satya Pal Malik and Advisor to Governor, K Vijay Kumar to kindly intervene in to the matter with a request that the notification imposing ban on disposable articles should be withdrawn immediately till the proper steps are taken by the Government to adopt the technology available to convert the waste into some usable products on the basis of latest technology available as adopted by the developed countries and save the industry and traders of the State.
