At present in a total force of about nine lakh of paramilitaries, there are only 20,000 women. There are several recommendations that there should be at least 33 per cent reservation for females in the paramilitary forces in the country. The Ministry of Home Affairs is reported to be taking steps in the direction of raising the presence of women personnel in these forces to 33 per cent.
Recruitment of women in forces like CRPF, CISF, BSF, SSB and ITBP is of national importance. In the first place it creates the healthy impression that womenfolk of or country are capable and trained to make their input in the defense and security of the country. Secondly, it develops a sense of self confidence among the women that they are not to be treated as sitting ducks. Thirdly, women leadership has to be developed in the country so that our future generations come up in an atmosphere of freedom and equality. Gender discrimination is a curse and sooner our country gets rid of it the better. Providing employment to a vast chunk of population is a great social relief. In particular when recruitments are to be made from among the reserved categories of the population, it is more welcome to see the changing social phenomenon in the country.
Our younger generation of girls is highly talented and they have the capacity to render as efficient a service as their counterparts among the men folks. This talent has to be given exposure and service in the paramilitary forces is a choice option. We would suggest to the Home Ministry that it would be advisable to make good part of recruitment to these forces from among the women in rural part of the country. Our rural population remains marginalized for various reasons and the time has come that the concept of women empowerment should take the rural areas also under its wings.
