Film director remanded into JC in cheating case

MUMBAI, Nov 16: A local court today remanded film director Mehul Kumar in to judicial custody for 14 days for his alleged involvement in a cheating case registered against him by producer Jayantilal Gada.
According to the police, Kumar had allegedly taken Rs 6 crore from Gada to make a Hindi film in the year 2000. However, he did not make any films nor did he return the money to Gada. When Gada questioned him about the film and its progress, Kumar replied saying that he had managed to get any particular actor or actress for the dates he required.
When Kumar did not make a film or return the money till 2010, Gada filed a complaint in the Andheri court. The court later directed the Juhu police to lodge a case against Kumar and conduct an inquiry.
‘Following the court order a case was registered, but Kumar approached the Sessions Court for anticipatory bail which was rejected. Post that he approached the High court who ordered him to appear in court so that the police could file a chargesheet against him,’ said senior police inspector, Arun Bhagat of Juhu police station.
Kumar appeared in court after the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him. He was then remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
‘We are planning to intensify our investigations in the case so that we can secure Kumar’s custody and find out where he has invested the money he took from Gada,’ added Bhagat.  (UNI)
