LEH, Nov 20: Filmmaker and actress from North-East, Rajni Basumatary today became the brand ambassador of SVEEP campaign of Leh district where elections are scheduled to be held on November 25.
Rajani, an actress from the North Eastern part of India, who recently acted in the Bollywood movies Mary Kom and Shaukeens, was approached by the Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Simrandeep Singh, to support the SVEEP initiatives being taken by district administration for promoting voter awareness.
She accepted the offer and visited Leh to participate in few events for promotion of SVEEP. The programme was inaugurated with the screening of Mary Kom in the Sindhu Sanskriti Kendra, Leh with a full house capacity of 500 new voters getting to see the movie on the big screen, which is rare in Leh.
Later, the brand ambassador visited Spangmik, Man, Merak and Chushul polling stations at the China border, along the Pangong lake, and distributed the new smart Voter ID cards to the voters of border areas. She appealed to the voters of Leh to come forward and elect their representatives. She said that being a resident of Assam, she can relate to the feelings of a remote place like Leh and thus agreed to support the efforts being made by Leh administration.
She appreciated the initiative of distributing new voter cards to the border people who have for long been demanding the EPIC card of ECI.
Deputy Commissioner thanked the film actress for sparing some time out of her busy schedule to join hands with Leh administration for conveying the message of SVEEP. He added that Mary Kom is an inspirational movie and people of Leh certainly relate to it in many ways.
It is worth mentioning that Rajni Basumatary, who has played mother to the bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra in Mary Kom, has her own production house and has produced the famous Assamese movie, Raag, which won seven State awards. She is married to 1999 batch IPS officer, Sirish Jain, who remained an instructor in Police Academy at Hyderabad and has done a commendable job in the Naxalite operations in Maharashtra.
